Low bone density, or osteoporosis, affects millions of Americans. Yet many do not realize they suffer from osteoporosis until they break a bone late in life. At Rivers Health, we offer simple, noninvasive bone densitometry scans to help prevent and manage osteoporosis and other bone disorders. Our radiology team performs dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scans to measure bone density in the spine and hip, where most osteoporotic fractures occur. Once bone density is calculated, we are able to help patients improve or maintain their bone health or, if needed, slow down bone less to prevent future fractures.
We recommend that all women 65 and older, as well as younger women with a personal or family history of bone fractures, receive a bone density scan. Smoking, low body weight, excessive alcohol or caffeine consumption, Vitamin D deficiency, physical inactivity and certain medications may also put individuals at greater risk for low bone density.
